Clothing

A good way to anticipate future long term needs is to ask yourself how many sets of clothing you go through a week, then by a spare set of pants, shirts, socks , and undergarments in that number. Store the clothing in large ziplock or well sealed garbage bags. Try to get blue jeans, cotton socks, and good quality cotton or cotton blend shirts. Get clothing you can work in. Remember that socks will be a barter item.

Try to get a set or two of hunting togs as well, since protein may become desirous but scarce. The author has always used regular issue army uniforms for hunting, but you may wish to use a type of camoflauge called MARPAT as it seems to infuriate Marines when worn by regular Joes.

Plan on getting at least two pairs of stout boots and two or more sets of inexpensive but comfortable running shoes.

Get a good sewing kit with strong thread and a good assortment of needles. You will want to patch the clothing you have before dipping into your reserves. If you have the skill or want to learn, get a bolt or two of cloth to make your own clothes. If you have ever wondered why kids clothes always looked so ugly from the 1920s and back, you will quickly find out why.

Get 30 or 40 cloth diapers and diaper pins. Dispoasbles aren’t the way to go for a lot of reasons. As always, you will prefer to get something durable and reusable, so get cloth diapers to have on hand.
