FAQs

What is a BOB?

BOB stands for Bug Out Bag.

What is a BOB used for?

In the event of an emergency, great or small, a properly prepared BOB will contain necessary items to better facilitate survival and comfort.

What is an LBE?

LBE stands for Load Bearing Equipment.

What is an LBE used for?

LBEs are used by soldiers to carry ammunition, water, and basic necessities. It is also good for hikers wanting to easily carry light items.

What is an LBV and what is it used for??

The same thing as an LBE, but it is a better design and far more comfortable.

Why would I need an LBE or an LBV? I am not a soldier and combat isn’t really a concern for me.

Truthfully, you probably don’t need one. The idea of this oracle will be to provide for those of us with “Be prepared” mindsets as much useful info as possible, so it has been included. LBVs and LBEs can be used in camping to comfortably carry things other than grenades and rifle ammunition though, so keep an open mind.

Is this stuff expensive?

Everything described here is taken from the point of view that the equipment should be as rugged, as inexpensive, and as functional as possible. Our view is a minimalist view predicated on the question, “If it isn’t functional and pertinent, then why have it?”

Isn’t this stuff just for survivalist nuts?

Only if you think staying alive is nuts. You have car insurance, why not have “stranded in the desert” insurance or “car broken down in a blizzard” insurance? It just makes sense to maximize your ability to stay alive and kicking in the face of adversity.

Where can I get this stuff?

Army surplus stores are an excellent source for inexpensive gear in most cases. Going online is another good option since the prices may be cheaper.

Who are you, Sir, that is so versed in the ways of science?

The authors are hardly experts at anything, least of all how you should plan to keep your life or protect your family. This BOB Oracle is nothing more than a general guide. We are both prior service, both having served with Infantry units, and thus we have some experience with packing for uncomfortable conditions for extended periods. We have some knowledge of what works and what doesn’t, and we are sharing that with you.
