Shelter

You already have a house, so what do you need a section on shelter for?

Have a few large sheets of treated plywood and a roll or two of shingles on hand in the event that your roof gets damaged. There may be no one but yourself to rely on to fix a small problem that will rapidly worsen. The author personally witnessed people in the eye of a hurricane running out into the stillness to hammer down loose roofing. If you don’t have a stout ladder that will reach your roof safely, get one.

Always have emergency shelter on hand as well. Dome tents are inexpensive and easily stored. They may come in very handy in the event that you have to take an extended camping trip.

You may wish to have extra lumber on hand in the event you desire a smokehouse to cure meat. Using an outside fireplace, some framing, and some plywood, you can easily make a smokehouse that keeps your kills edible all summer long and adds a pleasant taste to wild game and sausage.

As a precaution against being rendered windowless and unable to get replacement glass, get a few rolls of heavy mil plastic sheeting. It can be used to cover broken windows and also as an added layer of protection if you need to repair your roof. After the plywood is nailed up, you lay a sheet of plastic over the wood before tacking on the shingles.
